The Biel City Council is modernizing its practices by adopting an ordinance on inclusive language, reflecting the evolution of language and society.

The Biel municipal administration adopts inclusive language. The Municipal Council approved a new ordinance on the inclusive formulation of texts and communications from the administration which replaces directives from 1993. The city thus intends to respond to the evolution of language and society.

With this approach, it is a question of integrating the expectations of non-binary people and taking into account the needs of those who face difficulties in understanding writing, notes the City of Bienne in a press release released Tuesday.

Faced with this double challenge, the Municipal Council approved a new ordinance on the inclusive formulation of texts and communications from the Bienne municipal administration. This document defines general principles for inclusive communication.

To implement the ordinance, the chancellery has issued two drafting guides that can be adapted according to the uses and developments of the language. In this way, the entire administration now has a clear and common line of actionunderlines the City of Bienne.

All texts intended for the population must take this into account. On the Internet, pages in simplified language will gradually be put online. They will not replace the original pages, but will constitute a new version in easy to read and understand French (chl/ats)
