Bad times for the European automobile industry. A few days ago, the Volkswagen group confirmed a vast layoff plan aimed at eliminating tens of thousands of jobs and closing factories in Germany. At the same time, Audi announced the skimming of 4,500 employees in our neighbors across the Rhine alone.
This time, it's Ford who is doing it. This Wednesday, the communication of the group of the oval brand announced 4,000 new job losses by 2027 in Europeor 14% of the American giant's workforce on the Old Continent all the same. 2,900 of these affected positions will be eliminated in Germany compared to 800 in the United Kingdom and 300 in the rest of Europe. Ford currently employs 174,000 people worldwide and 32,000 in European countries alone.
The problem with electric cars
Ford, which is losing market share like other old car manufacturers, recently announced a reduction in production capacity for the new electric Capri and Explorer at the Cologne plant. The American manufacturer is largely counting on these two new products to convince customers on the Old Continent, but also on the next electric Puma which will arrive at the beginning of 2025.
For the moment, Ford is losing a lot of money with its electric cars which cost a lot of technical development and do not sell enough. Over the first three quarters of 2024, the Model e division dedicated to these electric vehicles admits a loss of 3.66 billion euros.
