Winter tires, chains: mandatory equipment in mountainous areas
To improve traffic on the roads in mountainous regions and the safety of users, it is compulsory to equip your vehicle with winter tires or to have snow chains or socks from November 1, 2024 to March 31, 2025, in certain mountainous areas . All vehicles with four wheels or more are affected by this obligation: light vehicles, utility vehicles, motorhomes, coaches, buses and heavy goods vehicles.
Mountainous areas: the obligation to equip yourself during the winter period
Du 1is November as of March 31, Chains or winter tires are required when driving in mountainous areas. Since 1is November 2024, sonly 3PMSF tires will be accepted as equivalent to the chains for traveling on roads in mountainous regions. The purchase and use of other “snow tires” will remain possible, but in this case users will also have to have chains to travel from November 1 to March 31 in the areas affected by the measure.

Which areas are affected?
The prefects of the 34 departments located in mountain ranges (Alps, Corsica, Massif Central, Jura Massif, Pyrenees, Vosges Massif) must establish the list of municipalities in which vehicle equipment becomes compulsory during the winter period, i.e. say from November 1st to March 31st. This list is established with and after consultation with the local elected officials concerned.
