Temporary work under the sign of uncertainty

Temporary employment, often seen as a leading indicator of economic health, is going through a period of uncertainty and fragility. In June 2024, the sector declined by 4.1% over one year, marking a gradual erosion, according to data from the Directorate for the Animation of Research, Studies and Statistics (Dares). Although the summer months brought some clearing, the overall context remains worrying, with a limited impact of sporting events and fluctuating demand depending on the sector.

Industry is particularly suffering, penalized by a difficult automotive situation, while logistics and transport manage to maintain a certain balance. The decline affects all qualifications, affecting both workers, employees and managers, and extends to almost all French regions.

A tripartite system at the heart of temporary work

Temporary employment is based on a three-dimensional relationship: the temporary worker, the temporary employment company (ETT) and the user company. It all starts with the temporary worker, hired by the ETT, who is responsible for finding missions corresponding to his profile. When a company faces a one-off need for qualified labor, it turns to the ETT, thus creating a link where the employee, although employed by the ETT, works for this client company the time of a mission.

Temporary work, a springboard rich in resources

Temporary work leaves behind it a host of prejudices, often fueled by a lack of understanding of its realities. There is criticism of its lack of stability, but temporary work can allow you to accumulate missions without interruption, some of which can even last up to 36 months. Another preconceived idea: only low-skilled jobs would be affected.

In reality, temp work welcomes both engineering school graduates and those without a baccalaureate, offering varied and well-paid opportunities. It should also be remembered that temporary workers, like all employees, benefit from the same rights to unemployment benefits.

This status also has advantages: it allows you to work in various sectors, thus enriching your CV and professional network. Added to this is an end-of-contract bonus of 10% of gross salary, making each mission a little more lucrative.

Promising sectors of temporary employment in

The December 2021 Prism'emploi barometer highlighted the sectors that are boosting the temporary employment market. Leading the way, transport and logistics posted an increase of 15.9%, driven by the growth of e-commerce. The services sector, for its part, surpassed its pre-crisis level, posting double-digit growth.

Commerce also followed this dynamic with an increase of 9%. Despite a decline of 10.4% for construction, penalized by supply difficulties, and a moderate recovery in the industry (+3%), these sectors remain key for temporary employment opportunities. Certain professions are particularly distinguished by high demand.
