Gushi Cliff Coffee, a cliffside cafe near the city of Fuzhou, China, offers spectacular views of the coast and Taiwan. Coffee, straight out of a thermos, is enjoyed on a wooden bench suspended in the air. Ye Kukun, a thirty-year-old, dared the adventure by embarking on a 30-minute climb 130 meters above the sea with a guide, as reported CNN.
She did not hesitate to pay 398 yuan, approximately 52 euros, to drink an Americano, the reward for her efforts. The price includes equipment, insurance and photos taken by the guide.
In fact, this adventure is a marketing operation. Indeed, Gushi Cliff Coffee, which bears the name of the neighboring village, is part of an initiative to promote rural tourism. Thanks to this attraction, the locality has seen infrastructure flourish to welcome visitors: bubble tea lounges, hotels and campsites. The goal: to save the region, riddled with debt. According to CNNthe publication of the photos on Chinese social networks aroused great interest.
Since then, fans of thrills climb the cliff on the occasion of a birthday or a marriage proposal. According to the owner, the adventure attracts around 50 visitors per day on weekdays and twice as many on weekends.
On the Chinese social networks Weibo and Xiaohongshu, we also read critical opinions: “I would under no circumstances go to this café, even if they paid me,” writes one user. Ye Kukun, meanwhile, acknowledges that “it was a bit expensive and the experience lacked thrills.”
