Norwegian fishermen catch US nuclear submarine in their net

Norwegian halibut fishermen managed a very surprising catch on Monday when a US nuclear submarine found itself stuck in the mesh of their net, reports the Daily Mail.

The crew of the Øygutt (Island Boy), a 10 meter long fishing boat, left the port of the northern village of Sommarøy to fish for halibut on Monday morning. The fishermen had a lucrative morning, hauling in hundreds of kilos of fish with a total market value of 1,500 euros ($2,220 CAD).

Then, the crew dipped their net again to try to repeat this success, but this time came across the USS Virginia, a 7,800-ton, 115-meter-long American nuclear submarine.

The state-of-the-art device, which had recently left the Arctic city of Tromsø, accidentally ended up in the net of the Øygutt, dragging the fishing vessel a distance of more than three kilometers.

The three fishermen on board the boat certainly have a fantastic anecdote to tell, but they are currently deploring the destruction of their net during this incident. The equipment that is now found at the bottom of the sea was worth between $5,000 and $6,000 CA.
