Launch of a pilot project for the reuse of treated wastewater in Yverdon – rts.ch

The City of Yverdon-les-Bains (VD) is launching a pilot project for the reuse of treated wastewater which could save 60 million liters per year. They will initially be intended for specific municipal uses, such as cleaning pipes.

As climate change and pressure on water resources intensify, the reuse of treated wastewater (REUT) represents a promising solution to optimize the use of this rare and vital resource. Currently not very developed in Switzerland, the REUT has already proven itself in other countries, noted the City on Wednesday in a press release.

The project is based on complete water treatment via the recently renovated wastewater treatment plant, which ensures the treatment of micropollutants. It also goes through an ultraviolet (UV) disinfection system designed to effectively eliminate pathogenic microorganisms.

Pioneer in Switzerland

This process, already commonly used in the treatment of drinking water, ensures that the treated water is as safe as bathing water, without risk to public health.

In its first phase, this project, a pioneer in Switzerland, aims to recycle treated water from the WWTP for specific municipal uses: filling road sweepers, watering plants and trees or washing municipal vehicles. He was favorably notified by the Canton.

The initiative, launched in partnership with the State of Vaud, is accompanied by a rigorous analytical monitoring plan, covering a wide range of microbiological and chemical parameters. This monitoring ensures that water quality remains in compliance with regulatory requirements throughout the trial.
