Stellantis, a major player in the automobile industry, is now banking on HVO biofuel, nicknamed “green diesel”. As Transport Média relays, this initiative aims to offer a more ecological alternative to its diesel models. This decision is also part of the group's strategy, which seeks to meet the environmental requirements of the European Union, which provides for financial sanctions for its automobile manufacturers from 2025.
The entire Stellantis diesel range compatible with HVO
From November 2024, all Euro 5 and Euro 6 diesel engines in Stellantis passenger and light commercial vehicles will be compatible with HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil). This biofuel is much less polluting than traditional diesel, the latter being made from renewable sources such as used vegetable oils and animal fats.
Compatibility extends to a selection of well-known engines from the Stellantis range: 1.3 MultiJet, 1.6 MultiJet, 2.0 MultiJet, 2.2 MultiJet (including the advanced version 4.0), 3.0 V6 MultiJet and 2.3 MultiJet F1A (fitted notably on the Fiat Ducato ). These engines, identified by the “XTL” marking on their filler capare optimized for this biofuel, allowing users to access a greener option without major technological change (autonomy of their vehicle).
A strategy to escape European sanctions
Beyond the ecological appeal, this approach is also part of a logic of compliance with future regulations of the European Union. Indeed, from 2025, car manufacturers will have to reduce the carbon emissions of their vehicles by 15% compared to 2021, under penalty of fines from the European executive. By integrating HVO into its strategy, Stellantis hopes not only to attract customers sensitive to environmental issues, but also to comply with strict standards without immediately disrupting its thermal production.
This Stellantis initiative therefore constitutes a response to regulatory challenges and offers motorists a simple solution to actively participate in the reduction of polluting emissions. For the manufacturer, the adoption of green diesel represents an effective way to alleviate the pressure of future sanctions while continuing to invest in the development of electric solutions for the future.
