Diverted flights: a suspicious package discovered in a baggage carousel at Montreal airport

Flights scheduled to land at Montreal’s Pierre-Elliott-Trudeau International Airport had to be diverted following the discovery of a suspicious package in a baggage carousel on Monday evening.

Analyzes of the package nevertheless revealed that the concerns were “unfounded,” assured Anne-Sophie Hamel, director of Corporate Affairs and Media Relations at the airport.

Earlier in the evening, the airport administration confirmed by email that “security mechanisms have detected the presence of a package of interest.”

“The SPVM and ADM airport security teams are on site and working in close collaboration,” we added. “With the safety of travelers and employees of the airport community being a priority at all times, an area of the terminal at the international arrivals level – mainly the baggage carousel area has been evacuated.”

On the Montreal-Trudeau International Airport site, departures in the direction of Toronto scheduled for 10:15 p.m. as well as that in the direction of Quebec for 10:30 p.m. were postponed to 11:30 p.m. and 10:50 p.m., but these delays were not linked to the event, said the spokesperson.

However, since the operation took place in the border control zone, several flights which were to land at the Montreal airport were diverted to other airports, said Mr.me Hamel on the phone.
