While the re-election of Donald Trump raises many questions, particularly geopolitical, the Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs called for a European Union as an “unequaled geopolitical power” and reframed Elon Musk, expected in the American government.
In an interview with Parisian published this Sunday, November 10, the Minister of Europe and Foreign Affairs Jean-Noël Barrot reacted to the recent victory of Donald Trump and the geopolitical consequences it implies, but also on a probable appointment of Elon Musk in a government. The latter was a fervent supporter of the Republican's campaign.
Regarding the person who bought Twitter in 2022, Jean-Noël Barrot warns: “Democracy is a fragile treasure. We will never accept that public debate is relocated to deregulated social networks in the hands of particular interests, whether American or Chinese.” “Let us hope that he does not inflict on American democracy the treatment he administered to Twitter,” adds the minister.
The EU, “an unrivaled geopolitical power”
In his interview, the minister takes the opportunity to support a European Union which “return to what it should never have ceased to be, an unrivaled geopolitical power”. He also warns Europeans about “a triple existential risk: widespread insecurity and war on the continent, industrial and technological decline, the disintegration of the democratic model. Our generation must come out of denial and have the courage to avoid the destiny that awaits Europe, that of a museum continent, aging and vassalized”.
Trump, ready to continue support for Ukraine?
In any case for Jean-Noël Barrot, “Donald Trump is too wise to agree to endorse what would be the largest territorial annexation in history in 75 years. Too wise to forget that no just and lasting peace can be concluded behind the backs of the Ukrainians and by- over the heads of Europeans.”
He also clarified that it was Volodymyr Zelensky that Trump called after being elected and not Vladimir Putin.
