After the structure that retains the central clock and the roof, the City of Sept-Îles now has a leak problem directly on the ice of the old Conrad-Parent arena. It is closed at least until Friday.
This time, we must plug a brine leak (water and salt used for cooling) under the surface of the ice. Ringette, figure skating and hockey activities have been canceled since yesterday.
The supervisor of the Sept-Îles arenas, Éric Smith, explains that the leak started when the zamboni crushed an ice bubble in the corner of the boards. A crew drilled into the concrete on Wednesday to repair.
From one emergency to another
“We manage emergencies as they arise. We think we have the right solution, but we cannot confirm how long it will take to regularize the situation,” specifies Éric Smith.
The City is seeking to extend the life of the old Sports Palace in Sept-Îles while awaiting the construction of the new arena. Bid envelopes for the project valued at nearly $60M will be opened on November 15. The work should begin next spring, but the Conrad-Parent arena will still have to be used for two winters.
The arena supervisor meets users of the Conrad-Parent arena this evening. Figure skating, ringette, minor hockey associations and some adult hockey leagues have canceled their activities for an indefinite period.
