An exception in French-speaking Switzerland, the Geneva school favors free software and open solutions.
-
This choice includes educational advantages, involving the use of a greater diversity of tools.

The Media Schools Service also carries out technological monitoring and is considering how to integrate generative AI while maintaining a local approach.
Geneva’s educational IT system continues to resist the temptation to prioritize commercial solutions for the general public. Students and teachers of all levels evolve in a digital environment that gives pride of place to open solutions. In primary school (4-12 years) and secondary I (12-15 years), children and adolescents mainly have access to computers which run on the Linux operating system, and on which free software is installed. . Educational applications are also partly developed in-house.
This approach is supported by the Schools-Media Service (SEM), attached to the Department of Public Education (DIP). Created in 2004, the SEM provides services to teachers at all levels of public school, up to secondary II (15-19 years old). It is he who manages the documentary, audiovisual and digital resources. The service occupies three floors of a large building located a stone’s throw from the Coulouvrenière bridge and the Hôtel des finances. Inside, around a hundred people are hard at work covering the various activities of the SEM.
