The large retail chains, Intermarché and Netto, will no longer sell strawberries and cherries in December and January. A way of “promoting seasonal French fruits and vegetables”, announces the Mousquetaires group, in order to confirm “its commitment to food sovereignty”.
“At the same time, we will strengthen promotions on fresh seasonal fruits and vegetables. The time is no longer for observations but for action,” explains Thierry Cotillard, the president of the group, to West France. The decision is above all symbolic, because these fruits represent less than 1% of the department's turnover at this time of year. “A symbol? Yes, but a strong symbol,” underlines the group, which intends to “put production and local producers at the heart of the issues. »
This measure must leave room for other seasonal products on the shelves. It could be extended to other products with strong seasonality “in the years to come”, depending on the results of this first experiment, specifies the group which announces eight measures to support farmers.
Promoting local producers
In order to promote its local partner producers, the group explains its intention to double their number by 2027. “Our objective is to reference 20,000 local producers within a 70 km radius around our stores for local food and direct support to producers,” underlines the group.

Along the same lines, an “Intermarché Terroir” label, guaranteeing the 100% French origin of products, will be deployed from the first quarter of 2025. Among other measures, a range of solidarity red wines will be created in order to support the wine industry. “35% of the price will go directly to the wine growers of Bordeaux, Rhône and Languedoc.”
