906 social and affordable housing units under construction in 2024: “We are taking the ball out of the stadium”, welcomes Mayor Marchand

Quebec City has put 906 social housing units under construction in 2024, a record in the last 10 years. The city administration says it is a resounding move that brings it closer to its ambitious goal of building 80,000 new homes by 2040.

“Today, we are taking the ball out of the stadium. […] 906, I don’t know if we haven’t already seen that in Quebec. 906 in a year, the ball came out of the fence, out of the stadium and I think it went beyond the river”, image of Mayor Bruno Marchand, at a press conference to inaugurate the Novam Vitam project, a building of 70 units of social and affordable housing in Charlesbourg.

In 2024, the City has shattered the mark of the last ten years in terms of social housing starts. Before that, the most successful year of the last ten was 2018 with 392 new homes.

“Our goal remains 500 for the next few years. Currently our predictions are at 425 for 2025,” maintains Mr. Marchand who, in one of many baseball metaphors, recalls that the objective is not “to move the fence away” after this “grand slam in the Series world”.
