Tourism demand generated added value of 1.6 billion francs in 2023 in the canton of Vaud. This figure comes from a study by the independent institute BAK Economics commissioned by Vaud Promotion and the French-speaking Association of Hoteliers (ARH). The Canton and the hoteliers were delighted, this Monday at a press conference, about this study which cost them nearly 100,000 francs. The last one of its kind dates back to 2005. With the updating of these figures, tourism promotion can move forward.
The main point of this study actually reveals no surprises. Yes, tourism occupies an important place in the Vaud economy. The fact was known but the figures were lacking. Thus, we learn that the total demand for tourism is around 2 billion francs, including hotels, parahotels and excursionists, catering and related sectors.
The sector is all the more qualified as “vital” for the Vaud economy as it represents 21,000 people (17,000 FTE), i.e. as many as the financial sector, or four times more jobs than industry. pharmaceutical. Thus, tourism contributes to 2.4% of Vaud’s GDP.
Starry nights
Furthermore, the study notes a move upmarket in the hotel industry. This consisted of 257 establishments last year. A figure that has been falling since 2005, offset by an increase in room and bed capacity. In these hotels are larger on average, with a high proportion of four and five-star rooms. The fact remains that, with 24 beds per 1000 inhabitants (32 on national average), the Vaud hotel industry has room for improvement, notes the ARH. This is especially true since the Swiss contributed to 54% of the 2.9 million overnight stays.
Such a study lays the foundations for monitoring the promotion of the canton and will serve to guide commercial strategies. State Councilor Isabelle Moret thus defended the need to continue the public support already granted to the sector, particularly with the aim of ensuring better sustainability.
