Alpine presents the Alpenglow Hy6 and its 6-cylinder hydrogen thermal engine

The Alpine Alpenglow, the French brand’s first hydrogen vehicle, makes its appearance at the 2024 motor show.

Presented in 2022 as a concept car aiming to embody the brand’s future directions in terms of design and sustainable innovation, Alpenglow already demonstrated the potential of the thermal engine running on hydrogen. This technology represents a realistic option for the brand’s sports models, combining performance and reduced carbon emissions. Alpine is thus preparing for future regulatory developments. The name Alpenglow also reflects this vision: it refers to a luminous phenomenon, a red glow that bathes the mountains before dawn, symbolizing the arrival of a new era.

On paper, this new Alpine has something to impress, its 6-cylinder V-shaped open at 100°, bi-turbo develops a maximum power of 740 hp (544 kW) at 7,600 rpm (or 211 hp/l). Its maximum torque is 770 Nm at 5,000 rpm while the maximum speed is reached at 9,000 rpm. All this power goes through a 6-speed sequential gearbox, which sends power to the rear wheels. Finally, the maximum speed announced by Alpine is 330 km/h.

Thanks to this concept car, Alpine is projecting itself towards another future of motorsport, that of hydrogen.

With the development of this brand new Hy6 V6 engine, we are demonstrating our involvement in hydrogen research which could foreshadow Motorsport applications with high levels of performance.“, said Bruno Famin, Alpine Motorsports Director. “A solution to continue to cultivate the passion for motor racing by means of a very noble V6 with remarkable specific power and a sound expression to thrill drivers and spectators with its maximum speed at 9,000 rpm. The Alpenglow Hy6 concept is the perfect expression of what is achievable to achieve the essential step of decarbonization in motorsport.

A design serving hydrogen

Since its very first appearance, the Alpenglow has evolved and sought to reconcile aerodynamic efficiency with a futuristic design. Various modifications and technical adjustments were made while respecting the already existing lines of the full carbon bodywork in Specular Blue color.

The Alpine Alpenglow concept car came to life in its rolling version presented earlier this year, and it further enhances its expressiveness by adopting its new Hy6 engine“, said Villain, Alpine Design Director. “The adaptation of this V6 is a technical challenge, highlighted to be presented for all to see in a redesigned rear section. Different elements of the concept design evolve, sculpted by the aerodynamic imperatives implied by its new performances, while visually evoking both the speed and the virtuous aspects of hydrogen.

The rims keep their design and gradient suggesting movement, even when stationary, in perfect symbiosis with the tires specially designed by Michelin, whose pattern integrates perfectly with the style of the Alpenglow wheels.
