Boeing announces the loss of 70,000 jobs

These layoffs will take place throughout the coming months and will affect all levels of the company, Boeing said in a message to its employees relayed by the American press.

The giant manufacturer also announced yet another postponement to 2026 of the launch of its new plane, the 777X, and the suspension of construction of the 767 cargo plane.

The 777X, with a capacity of 400 passengers, is eagerly awaited by aircraft manufacturers who wish to benefit from its performance, particularly in terms of energy savings on very long hauls.

Unveiled in 2013, for deliveries from 2020, the aircraft has not yet been delivered. The 480 unfulfilled orders are initially expected to be delivered in 2025.

For the 767, billed as the cargo flagship, Boeing said it will deliver the remaining 29 orders for the plane before phasing it out starting in 2027.

In addition, the aircraft manufacturer anticipates $3 billion in pre-tax charges related to the two programs, the 777X and the 767, and an additional $2 billion in writedowns related to several troubled programs in its defense division. These charges will result in a quarterly net loss of approximately $6 billion.

These announcements come as the company struggles to find a quick way out of the crisis pitting it against its machinists, who are demanding better wages to cope with the high cost of living.

Negotiations to end their strike, which began on September 13, collapsed at the start of the week, further aggravating the manufacturer’s difficulties.
