ZFE: a mayor of the Metropolis requests a moratorium from Prime Minister Michel Barnier

Laurent Jaoul, mayor of Saint-Brès, evokes a “punitive” decision for 50,000 motorists who could be prevented from driving in the Metropolis on January 1, 2025.

Laurent Jaoul, mayor of Saint-Brès, is not giving up. He decided to change levels to request a moratorium on the Low Emission Zone (ZFE). Which must ban excessively polluting vehicles from circulation, Crit’Air 3 and 4 in and six surrounding municipalities on January 1, 2025.

After having subscribed to Hervé Martin’s request for a moratorium from the president of the Montpellier Metropolis, Michaël Delafosse, on Tuesday October 8 during the council, the Hérault mayor has just written to Michel Barnier, the Prime Minister. The subject of the missive says it all: “ZFE Métropole de Montpellier moratorium”.

“Difficult to justify to my administrators”

A letter which will be hand-delivered to Michaël Delafosse on Monday October 14 and which underlines that in less than three months: “50,000 motorists in the Montpellier Metropolis will be forced to replace their vehicle in order to comply with Crit’Air1 and 2 standards, under penalty of no longer being able to travel within the territory of our intermunicipality”.

A decision “punitive” that it is more and more “difficult to justify… to my constituents, especially since political communications on this subject sometimes lack clarity”said the elected official to the head of government. Recalling that Michaël Delafosse expressly assured during the meeting that there would be neither “controls or sanctions relating to compliance with the ZFE”while this skill “responsible to the State and not to the police powers of the mayor”underlines Laurent Jaoul.

Not sure that Michel Barnier, in the middle of a debate on the budget and faced with a tax increase intended to reduce the country’s deficit to 5% of GDP in 2025, would not be very willing to respond favorably to this request. But you never know…
