OpenAI, the start-up behind ChatGPT, opens an office in

“We are expanding. » After setting up in London and Dublin, the American start-up OpenAI, creator of the very popular artificial intelligence (AI) tool ChatGPT, will open an office in , it announced on X, this Wednesday 9 October 2024.

This presence should allow OpenAI “to access the French talent pool”defended the company in a press release cited by theAFPadding that it would start recruiting soon. “With a team on site, we will be able to work closely with French companies, institutions and developers to help them take full advantage of the benefits of AI”said Sam Altman, co-founder of OpenAI.

The company also announced plans to open offices in Singapore, New York and Brussels later this year.

Standoff with the French press and with Brussels

“This choice reflects the growing dynamism of our French artificial intelligence ecosystem, which we want to position as one of the world leaders”for his part greeted the new Secretary of State in charge of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Technology, Clara Chappaz, quoted in the press release. Paris will host the next international AI summit in February 2025, with President Emmanuel Macron having the stated ambition of making a major player in the sector.

The arrival of OpenAI in France will, however, take place in a context of standoff with French newspapers. The developer of ChatGPT in fact refused in mid-September to open negotiations with two French press organizations to use the content of the 800 titles they represent for a fee.

The start-up, valued at $157 billion after a major fundraising of $6.6 billion last week, is also, like all the behemoths in the artificial intelligence sector, on Brussels’ radar. The European Union continues to review the partnership between Microsoft and OpenAI and its impacts on competition.
