“It’s a discriminatory practice”: a change announced at Ryanair criticized by Testachats

LThe consumer defense association Testachats believes that the end of paper boarding passes and counter check-in for Ryanair flights is a “discriminatory practice”. The association recalls, in a reaction published Wednesday, that there is no legal obligation to have a smartphone.

The CEO of the low-cost airline Michael O’Leary announced on Monday that Ryanair counters would disappear in airports next spring and that each passenger would have to check in via their smartphone. Ultimately, Michael O’Leary wants to make check-in at the counter impossible. “We are working to have everything done via the application by May 1 at the latest,” according to his comments relayed by the Irish media. The objective of this measure is to limit the company’s operational costs.

A choice that Testachats deplores. “Ryanair’s decision to eliminate paper boarding passes is another step towards excluding people who do not have a smartphone. We believe that this is a discriminatory practice and urge the authorities, particularly European ones, to seriously address this issue,” responded the spokesperson for the consumer defense association, Julie Frère.

The organization believes that “more and more companies are penalizing or even depriving people who do not have a smartphone of essential services”. In particular, it had launched legal action against SNCB, to fight against the railway operator’s new pricing policy which allows you to obtain better prices when you reserve your ticket via its application.
