A cold shower for hoteliers, attendance is down sharply compared to summer 2023

A pride for and an enthusiasm which did not necessarily translate into the cash registers of hotels in France, and particularly in Ile-de-France. During the 2024 Olympic Games, hotel occupancy is in fact down this summer compared to the previous summer, according to INSEE. According to the (still provisional) data for the period May to August 2024, there was no “positive effect of the Olympic and Paralympic Games” this summer.

As elsewhere, attendance at collective tourist accommodation in Ile-de-France fell during the start of summer. But unlike other regions, occupancy in Ile-de-France in hotels, campsites and other collective tourist accommodation did not rebound in July and even less in August compared to 2023. It is even in clear decline, and the Paris region lost nearly 2.5 million overnight stays (-7.8% compared to the 2023 summer season).

Business customers have deserted the capital

More than elsewhere, Ile-de-France hotels have seen their business clientele desert the capital this summer: summer business nights thus decrease, compared to summer 2023, by 11.6% in the region, compared to 8. 6% nationally. The decline in business tourism explains more than a third of the drop in hotel nights in the region.

In detail, INSEE also notes in its note of October 3 that in Ile-de-France, British customers, usually very present in Ile-de-France hotels, have reduced their attendance by almost one night in six ( -16.5%). As in other regions, the “extra-European” clientele is, however, more present in 2024. The American clientele is increasing, particularly in Ile-de-France (+5.2% of overnight stays). The region remains by far the main hotel destination for customers from the United States, and represents 61.7% of American hotel nights in France during the summer of 2024.
