Cathy Alegria, Xerfi – From waste to resource: how the ecological transition is redefining waste management – Sector intelligence

How can waste management specialists make the most of the ecological transition initiated by their clients, public or private? Xerfi’s latest exclusive Precepta Insights study identifies 10 key levers for seizing new business opportunities arising from environmental constraints and long-term resource depletion. Our experts particularly highlight relevant strategies for decarbonizing and optimizing waste collection and treatment. Large private clients must in fact reduce their environmental impact, mainly due to the implementation of the CSRD directive (for corporate sustainability reporting directive). This directive integrates the indirect impact of their activities into the calculation of their carbon footprint, which includes the management of their waste as well as their end-of-life products. Municipalities, for their part, have taken an ecological turn with an emphasis on air pollution generated by diesel garbage trucks. At the same time, waste managers must position themselves appropriately in the high-potential segments of recycling and reuse. More and more client companies are investing in the circular economy for regulatory reasons and to reduce their exposure to the growing instability of raw materials markets.

So, how can waste stakeholders concretely support their customers in their ecological transition? What are the future growth drivers for the sector? And how can artificial intelligence improve operational efficiency?

In this report, Xerfi analysts notably analyzed the ongoing growth strategies of waste management players. Four trends emerge:

• Let us first mention the lever of decarbonization of waste, like the strategies implemented by Veolia and Suez. In this context, stakeholders are implementing low-carbon collection solutions, seeking to increase the rate of energy recovery from waste and developing recycling from a circular economy perspective.
• Companies in the sector are also investing in digital solutions to optimize waste management. For example, they use IoT solutions or computer vision, a field of artificial intelligence that allows machines to automatically classify and sort waste, identifying the types of materials to optimize their recycling.
• Some players are also strengthening their production capacity. This is notably the strategy of Chimirec in hazardous waste and Galloo in metal processing.
• Finally, other players, like Paprec, are seeking to develop internationally.

Beyond deciphering current strategies, Xerfi consultants provide their strategic recommendations in this study. This report also incorporates a comprehensive analysis of the waste market environment, competitive gaming trends, as well as numerical forecasts for the sector until 2026.
