Immersion cooling: Spanish firm Submer raises 55 million

The Spanish scale-up Submer has just raised $55.5 million for its immersion server cooling system. Its technology promises data center operators to reduce their energy costs and carbon emissions.

The concept of immersion cooling for data centers is coming back to the forefront, with the Spanish scale-up Submer which has just announced that it has raised $55.5 million.

Immersion cooling is a technique which consists of immersing the components of a server in a special, dielectric and thermally conductive liquid. This process transfers heat from the servers directly to the liquid, reducing water requirements and carbon emissions, Submer points out in its documentation published online. The firm adds that this approach becomes crucial as traditional methods, such as air cooling or current liquid cooling systems, struggle to meet the growing demands of data centers in today’s environment.

Submer’s technology is based on single-phase immersion cooling, in which the liquid never changes state, requiring little maintenance compared to other immersion cooling techniques. The liquid used also has the advantage of being biodegradable, non-toxic and non-flammable.

Other companies have launched into this niche, like the Dutch pioneers Iceotope, who began a collaboration with Schneider Electric in 2019. But Submer hopes to stand out, particularly among hyperscalers. According to the Spanish firm, they should be particularly interested in the energy and water savings enabled by its immersion cooling technique, as well as the densification of infrastructure that this method promotes. Submer claims that this density becomes essential at a time when the power consumption of chips now exceeds 1,000 watts, in particular due to the growing demand for capacity induced by artificial intelligence.
