CWP Global joins consortium for 600 MW green hydrogen project

(Ecofin Agency) – Unlike other African countries which have launched into the green hydrogen sector from solar or wind power, Angola is banking on its immense hydroelectric potential to produce the fuel of the future.

On October 2, industrialists CWP Global, Sonangol, Gauff and Conjuncta concluded, during the Angola Oil & Gas conference in Luanda, an agreement under which CWP Global will join the existing consortium of three other partners which are developing a project of green hydrogen in Angola.

This is a project designed to use the reserve capacity of existing hydroelectric power generation to produce green hydrogen and derivatives, with an electrolysis capacity planned at 600 MW.

It is currently planned that the green hydrogen produced will be combined with nitrogen to make green ammonia for export. Ammonia production from Phase 1 of the project is expected to reach 400,000 tonnes per year, with the possibility of increasing capacity in later phases.

Building on existing infrastructure, as well as land available for downstream facilities, the project’s rapid development schedule positions Angola to become a key supplier of green ammonia before completion. of the decade.

Given the global trend and desire to scale up green hydrogen production to meet the targets needed to net emissions reduction by 2050, this project could not only accelerate the transition to clean energy, but also make Angola a new pole of sustainable industrialization in Africa.
