In a fortnight, the Auchan robin will replace the red and white Casino signs in the Corsican landscape.
The latter appeared on the island in 1993 through a franchise contract with the four Unigros hypermarkets, owned by the Devichi family.
Two years later, in 1995, the company Codim2 was created. Casino France enters the capital at 50%, it will be 100% in 2000. Exit the Devichi who remain, among others, owners of the walls. In the hands of Casino, Codim2 quickly became the largest private employer on the island, with a “rich” union life.
Thus, the journey will be marked by numerous conflicts where the CFDT, the CGT and the STC compete: the collective agreement for mass distribution is one of the worst. Hard strikes follow one another, against part-time work, for salary increases and bonuses.
The period is not exempt from much more troubled games. In 2004, the Furiani Casino was partially destroyed. 10 years earlier, that of Propriano had been completely destroyed. In 2008, the Porto-Vecchio structure was damaged, after threats, this time, from the FLNC UC. In 2012, mini nuit bleue, FLNC, where other brands like Leclerc or Décathlon are also targeted.
If at the checkout, generally speaking, prices are always higher in Corsica than on the continent, Casino is more expensive than other major distributors. An even more striking fact with, in particular, the massive installation of Leclerc from 2018.
By cross-checking different sources on market shares, Codim2/Casino, with 330 million euros in turnover, was in second position at the end of 2023: between 30 and 35%. A position that the Rocca group is now taking over for Auchan Retail France, seven years after its first steps on this market.
