“From €45 to €1239”: who, Walloons or Flemish, pays the most car taxes?

The new Flemish government has decided to make very strong decisions regarding the future of the car. There is no longer any question of favoring electric cars with a purchase bonus or no road tax. There is no longer any question of banning the purchase of a petrol or diesel car in 2029 since the measure is postponed to 2035. Finally, there is no longer any question of toughening traffic rules in the low-emission zones of Antwerp or Ghent.

In terms of taxes, is it better to be a motorist in Flanders or Wallonia? With rare exceptions, it is in Flanders that it is better to be a motorist, clearly answers Traxio, the federation of the automobile sector. She also affirms that the amount collected by taxes is equivalent in the two regions. However, in Flanders, we sell almost twice as many cars as in Wallonia. Conclusion: a Walloon pays twice what a Flemish person pays, according to Traxio.

How is this done? Because the calculations are different. Since 2011, it is the regions which set the registration taxes, which we pay only once, and the circulation taxes, which we pay every year. Overall, this principle of double taxation applies everywhere in Belgium regardless of the region of residence. On the other hand, the calculation system is completely different, which leads to enormous differences depending on the vehicle.

In Flanders, the system takes into consideration the type of fuel, the level of depollution of the vehicle (its Euro standard), the level of its CO2 emissions as well as its fiscal power. Cleaner and environmentally friendly vehicles such as plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles have an advantage, to guide the choices of motorists.

In Wallonia, the calculation is based on CO2 emissions and vehicle power.

Some concrete examples

The Flemish pay nothing for an electric car, no registration tax, no road tax, quite simply because electric vehicles do not emit a single gram of CO2.

In Wallonia, you pay a minimum registration tax of €61 for a 100% electric vehicle and a minimum road tax of almost €84.

Concretely, a petrol city car has a registration tax of €51 in Flanders and €61 in Wallonia. For this same model, count on a road tax of €106 in the north compared to €151 in Wallonia.

For a plug-in hybrid, gasoline, high-end model, count on €45 for registration in Flanders, €1,239 in Wallonia. And for the road tax,
223€ in Flanders, 439€ in the south of the country.
