Why such a vehicle?

Let’s start at the beginning. This very particular configuration is called “Back to Back”, which literally means “back to back” and no need to explain why. But its main reason for being is cost reduction.

The ingenious solution appeared on Citroën’s UK commercial vehicle website a while ago, although as we later discovered, it’s not the only brand to have used it.

So the vans are bolted into a temporary structure and sent to third-party companies that build campers or any other type of specialty vehicles, such as towing or emergency services.

Manufacturing costs are reduced because Citroën built the vans without having to add the usual rear end in the chassis-cab configuration. And shipping costs also go down, because it takes up less space.

Likewise, the buyer also has greater freedom to build their own creations, without having to adapt to the manufacturer’s cab chassis, and can move straight to installing their custom accessories.

At the time, the announced price for the Relay Back to Back was around 42,691 euros. And yes, if you are wondering, each of the two models has its own engine, gearbox, chassis number…
