On the sidelines of the Africa50 General Assembly, Andry Rajoelina sends a message to international investors

The Malagasy President calls on the international community to support the ambitious energy transition program for a sustainable future in Madagascar.

Antananarivo, September 19, 2024 – On the occasion of the Africa50 General Meeting of Shareholders, the President of the Republic reaffirms his commitment to addressing the urgent energy challenges facing the country and makes a strong appeal to the international community and technical and financial partners to support the Malagasy energy transition program.
Faced with an energy situation largely dependent on thermal power plants, the vision put forward by the President of the Republic is clear: Madagascar must double or even triple its energy capacity in the coming years to support its industrialization and meet the growing needs of its population. This essential transition to a green economy is at the heart of the presidential program. To realize this vision, major projects are already underway:
● A massive programme to install 50 MW of solar panels in 47 districts has been launched, and the government plans to increase their capacity to an additional 600 MW in the coming years.
● At the same time, the country is relying on its immense hydroelectric potential, estimated at more than 7,800 MW, to strengthen its energy sovereignty and gradually free itself from dependence on fossil fuels.
Aware of the urgency, the President of the Republic declared: “Every day that passes increases Madagascar’s financial burden. It is imperative to act quickly and redirect our investments towards sustainable and renewable energy sources. Our objective is to double or even triple our energy capacity in the coming years to support the industrialization and development of our country.”
Renewable energy is not only a response to current economic and environmental challenges, but also offers significant opportunities for job creation and value sharing. The President thus stressed the importance of the support of the international community to ensure the success of this transition, citing the need for strengthened partnerships and adequate financial support.
This ambitious program aims to offer Malagasy people a more prosperous, greener, and more inclusive future. Madagascar is resolutely looking to the future, with the conviction that the energy transition is the key to its economic emergence and the well-being of future generations.
