Energy: the share of nuclear power in the world at its lowest for forty years

Nuclear power will only produce a little over 9% of the electricity consumed worldwide in 2023, according to the latest edition of the Report on the State of the Global Nuclear Industry, published this Thursday.

OAs we know, since the terrible energy crisis that Europe experienced following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, nuclear electricity has seen a marked resurgence of interest. Nuclear power is seen as a vector of security of supply and energy independence. Several countries have put nuclear power back at the top of their energy agenda. In Europe, an alliance of twelve countries, including , the Netherlands, Poland and the Czech Republic, has set itself the goal of an installed capacity of 150 GW by 2050 in the EU – compared to 100 currently. And on a global scale, some are promising a tripling of the world’s nuclear fleet. In France, the start-up of the Flamanville EPR, after seventeen years of work, instead of the five planned, is seen as a sign of a possible revival for the sector, which must now tackle the construction of six other EPR2 reactors.
