Charleroi Airport (BSCA) will resume operations this Saturday, the airport management said in a statement. According to the latter, an agreement was reached between it and the unions at the end of a day in which the two parties discussed for more than eight hours.

A joint union front strike movement began on Thursday morning at the Walloon airport. As a result, all flights departing and arriving at the Charleroi airport were cancelled on Thursday and Friday. The unions denounced a “general fed-up feeling” among staff due in particular to the pressure on working conditions.

Management stressed that the agreement was about a “set of solutions.” Earlier in the evening, the unions had mentioned several commitments by management that did not provide concrete solutions but provided for more “matters” open or not for discussion and a timetable for negotiations.

These commitments by management were at the centre of a general meeting of staff organised in the early evening. The atmosphere was tense according to the unions, with some workers finding management’s proposals too timid. However, at the end of the meeting, the workers agreed to return to work this Saturday.

“We hope that management has become aware of the malaise that reigns in the company and that the discussions will allow us to move forward quickly,” said Alain Goelens, Setca permanent representative. The union representative specified that the themes of flexibility and schedules are among the points that will be addressed during the negotiations.

On Saturday, all flights departing and arriving from Charleroi will be able to operate, the airport spokesperson said. “Passengers travelling via the airport this Saturday must arrive at the airport, as usual, two hours before their flight departs,” she said.

On Friday evening, following the agreement reached at Charleroi airport (BSCA), Walloon Minister for Airports Cécile Neven welcomed “the renewed dialogue between management and unions and the resumption of activities” there.

According to the minister, Charleroi airport is a key player in the economy and mobility. “It is now necessary to demonstrate once again that BSCA is a reliable tool and to restore confidence in all passengers,” she stressed.
