Stellantis to invest more than $400 million in three Michigan plants

The Franco-Italian-American car manufacturer Stellantis announced on Wednesday an investment of more than 406 million dollars (more than 368 million euros), divided between three factories in Michigan in the north of the United States, and oriented towards the production of electric vehicles and batteries. These “Investments support Stellantis’ multi-energy technology and production flexibility to leverage its competitive advantages across a broad range of electrification adoption scenarios”the group said in a statement, specifying that they were part of its Dare Forward 2030 business plan.

The plan calls for an investment of more than $50 billion in electrification, to achieve, by 2030, 100% of sales of electric vehicles (BEV) for individuals in Europe and 50% for cars and pickups in the United States. In detail, the manufacturer intends to grant $235.5 million to the Sterling Heights plant (SHAP), which is to produce the very first fully electric pickup of the Ram brand. The Ram 1500 REV is to be marketed by the end of the year.

Upcoming modernizations

The group recently modernized this plant to be able to produce thermal and electric vehicles on the same assembly line. In addition, the Warren Truck Plant (WTAP) complex is to receive approximately $97.6 million to manufacture the future electric Jeep Wagoneer, which is to be launched by the end of 2025. Stellantis announced in early August that it would stop production of the entry-level Ram 1500 Classic pickup, which has been manufactured at this site since 1993, which could result in the loss of nearly 2,500 jobs from October 8.

Finally, the auto giant plans to spend more than $73 million to modernize the Dundee Engine Plant (DEP) in order to “assemble, weld and test the battery trays for the STLA Frame platform, and machine the front and rear cross members for the STLA Large platform”Their production will begin in 2024 and 2026 respectively.
