Safonov’s complicated international break, deprived of match with Russia due to typhoon

Complicated first months for Matvey Safonov (25 years old). A solid starter at Krasnodar in Russia, the goalkeeper made the big jump by joining PSG during the summer transfer window. Destined to be the understudy of a still unshakeable Gianluigi Donnarumma, the Russian has still not played in Ligue 1. So far, the 25-year-old international has had to make do with a friendly match against Sturm Graz, and was even absent from the group that went to Lille after being affected by a viral syndrome.

To get back to the joys of competition, Matvey Safonov was counting on the international break and the gathering with Russia where he is the usual starter, but everything did not go as planned. Banned from competitions organized by UEFA because of the conflict in Ukraine, Russia had two friendlies in its program, one against Vietnam, the other against Thailand. The first match took place, but the Parisian watched the victory (3-0) from the bench, Andrey Lunev having been preferred by his coach.

Safonov deprived of playing time due to “bad weather”

After this match won by his team, the goalkeeper hoped to gain playing time against the Thais this Saturday, but the game was cancelled due to “bad weather” in Vietnam, the place where the friendly match was to take place. Via a press release, the Russian selection gave details: “The decision was made taking into account the amount of precipitation already fallen and the weather forecast for the next 24 hours in Hanoi.”

Super Typhoon Yagi has been hitting northern Vietnam for several hours with winds exceeding 149 kilometers per hour, killing three people, according to initial reports, while a dozen others are missing. This phenomenon has already occurred in China before reaching Vietnam, and has left at least two dead and 92 injured.

Matvey Safonov will therefore have to hope that the series of upcoming matches will force his coach Luis Enrique to offer him some playing time, especially since his rival Gianluigi Donnarumma has already played the first Nations League match with Italy against France (3-1). In addition, the former Milan player has a chance of starting again against Israel on September 9.
