What the French think about the appointment of Michel Barnier to Matignon

SIn a surprise move, the new Prime Minister Michel Barnier is very widely supported on the right, particularly by the electorate of Ensemble and LR. This is what the latest Cluster17 survey, conducted on September 5 and 6 among 1,027 people representative of French society, reveals.

Of all those surveyed, 23% say they like him, compared to 24% who don’t. Despite a busy political career, Michel Barnier seems to have a lack of notoriety, with 26% who don’t know him and 16% who have no opinion.

Only one in three respondents (32%) think that Emmanuel Macron made the right decision in appointing him, compared to 43% who think the opposite. The overwhelming majority (88%) of the Les Républicains electorate answers “yes”, and a large majority (68%) at Renaissance. “Michel Barnier is at the intersection of these two electorates, he is the most likely to unite them”, believes Stéphane Fournier, director of studies at Cluster17.

Voters from the two political forces, which have 47 and 99 seats respectively, are also very much in favour of alliances with other political forces within the National Assembly to create a majority: Ensemble voters at 87%, LR voters at 68%.
