In Israel, the fate of hostages held in Gaza leaves a deep trauma after eleven months of war

Saturday, September 7, marks 11 months since the war began in Gaza. The starting point came on October 7, 2023, when Hamas killed nearly 1,200 people in Israel, and another 251 were kidnapped. This brutal terrorist attack rocked the Jewish state, which prided itself on being the home of the Jewish people and its protector. But 11 months later, the trauma is profound, especially for the families of the hostages, because they feel that their release is not a priority.

With our correspondent in Jerusalem, Sami Boukhelifa

Israel has made the eradication of Hamas a priority. The Israeli army is committing carnage in Gaza where at least 40,878 people were killed. Some believe that the release of the hostages is being relegated to the background by the Israeli government. And this issue deeply divides Israeli society. It remains split in two between those who claim to defend ” moral values “, and those who advocate more military pressure.

« I feel devastated by this situation. But I remain hopeful because there are so many people protesting to call on our government to reconsider its priorities. But our government has ignored us for 11 months. We have a moral obligation to our hostages. It is part of our identity as a people, as a nation. ” she said.
