Asked on TF1 about the huge public deficit, which is expected to widen further to 5.6% of GDP this year, the Prime Minister reaffirmed his desire not to continue the excesses of previous governments.

The new Prime Minister Michel Barnier set among his priorities on Friday September 6th the revaluation of work and not increasing France’s debt, in his first interview on TF1.

Asked about the abysmal public deficit, which is expected to widen further to 5.6% of GDP this year, the Prime Minister appointed on Thursday replied: “Faced with this emergency, I do not rule out greater tax justice”. “I will strive, with the various ministers who will be appointed, to better control, to better use public money and to rely on public services, because we need efficient public services”he added.

“Growth does not fall from the sky”

“We also need growth, growth (…) it does not fall from the sky, it does not come from the administration, it comes from businesses, small, large or medium-sized, from farmers, fishermen, from our foreign trade, from the role of French people abroad (…), from our departments and our overseas regions”added Michel Barnier. “We are fed up with writing blank checks for future generations, both in terms of ecology and public finances”he developed.

The head of government also cited the public services which “are also a huge need in urban areas, but also in the countryside”thus taking up the broad outlines of the “legislative pact” presented by his party Les Républicains in July, whose support he needs in the Assembly. “I think of medical deserts and I naturally think of health and housing”he said, adding ecological debt to his priorities.
