The boom in high school graduates could not be absorbed by the university. Private groups took over by targeting professions in demand. Today, more than one in four students is preparing a paying diploma.

Galileo Global Education, Omnes, Eduservices, PPA, Ionis… Their names are unknown to the general public. However, these giants of private education are the size of universities, sometimes with more campuses than Sciences-Po and budgets larger than those of HEC or Polytechnique. They thrive by filling a demand that is poorly met by public higher education, which is increasingly selective and underdeveloped in certain courses in demand on the job market. Thus, more and more students are paying between 6,000 and 12,000 euros per year, whereas registration for a bachelor’s degree does not exceed 175 euros and 250 euros for a master’s degree. Today, more than one in four is preparing a paid diploma.

The first waves of this wave are old. In thirty years, the proportion of high school graduates per generation has doubled to exceed 80%. Among them, more than a third come from technological and professional sectors that the university is not interested in. Even when they obtain a place at university, very few obtain their degree. As for BTS and IUT, with their short and technical training, they have become more difficult to access with the massification of higher education.

A bonus of 6,000 euros for each work-study student

In the early 2010s, unemployment hit a quarter of young people under 25 and that’s when these private groups were formed. HR, management, digital, marketing, communication, design… Their schools lead directly to work with professionals from companies as teachers and a pedagogy based on concrete projects. They recruit on the Internet without going through Parcoursup.
