While a few years ago, the idea of a pyromaniac drone would have been science fiction, it is now a very real concept. Ukraine continues to exploit the capabilities of drones on the battlefield, introducing a particularly formidable new weapon: a “flamethrower” drone, Le Point reported on September 4. This device, capable of dropping incendiary materials from the air, offers new possibilities to the Ukrainian armed forces in the face of their Russian adversaries.
The drone, filmed in action in Zaporizhia Oblast, has caused a stir on social media, racking up over a million views on X/Twitter. The footage shows the aircraft flying over a row of trees between two fields and, for about twenty seconds, raining fire on the area below. The smoke rising between the trees is evidence of the effectiveness of the attack. The drone, apparently “sacrificed” in the operation, appears to have been hit by its own flaming cargo.
This use of drones is unprecedented and allows enemy positions hidden under vegetation to be targeted. Soldiers hit by the incendiary jet suffer serious burns, and munitions present on site can explode. Although the name “flamethrower” is used, it is actually thermite, an incendiary substance composed of ferric oxide and aluminum.
