The person responsible for the fatal accident involving a stolen vehicle on August 13 at the Saint-Avold toll booth (Moselle) is on the run abroad, but his accomplice has been indicted, the Sarreguemines public prosecutor’s office announced on Wednesday, September 4.
The Citroën Berlingo which fatally hit a 59-year-old Sanef employee was stolen the same evening from an association “by two individuals from Forbach”, said the public prosecutor of Sarreguemines, Olivier Glady, in a press release.
The two people then fled, one in the stolen vehicle, the other in his own vehicle.
The accident happened a few minutes later, the stolen car hitting the Sanef employee “while trying to force the toll barrier”, the magistrate said. A second toll barrier was then forced, in Farébersviller.
The driver flew from Brussels “to a Maghreb country”
A judicial investigation was opened on August 21, and the co-author of the theft was arrested on August 29. Charged with “group theft”, he was placed under judicial supervision. “Known to the police”, he has no convictions on his criminal record.
On the other hand, the investigation was able to establish that the driver of the stolen vehicle left France “on the evening of the accident” and took a plane “from Brussels airport to a Maghreb country”, the prosecutor said.
Investigations are continuing “with the help of international instruments” in order to arrest him, he concluded.
The day after the accident, Sanef expressed its “deep sadness” and offered its “support” to the family, friends and colleagues of the victim, who had worked for the motorway company for 38 years.
