German Chancellor Olaf Scholz welcomed US President Donald Trump’s plans to increase oil and gas exports, saying it was “good for Europe and Germany”, German newspaper Handelsblatt reported on Sunday.
Mr Scholz said in the interview that the measure would contribute to the transition phase towards climate neutrality, which would last until the middle of the century.
“The increase in supply on the global market translates into lower energy prices,” said the Chancellor.
Mr. Scholz praised Mr. Trump for his desire to build new terminals for liquefied natural gas (LNG), something his predecessor Joe Biden had not done. Mr. Scholz said he had always been opposed to stopping the expansion of LNG terminals in the United States.
However, Mr. Scholz said he regretted Mr. Trump’s executive order last week to withdraw from the Paris climate agreement.
-“Global warming is a serious danger,” Mr Scholz said, adding that Germany would maintain its course on climate policy.
On another issue, the Social Democratic chancellor sharply criticized his conservative rival in Germany, Friedrich Merz, for his stance on the country’s ongoing immigration debate.
