To commemorate the death of Mahsa Amini on September 16, 2022, which sparked a powerful protest movement in Iran, opponents abroad have called for demonstrations in cities around the world. But inside the country, the media has been silenced by the authorities. Security institutions “warned the press not to publish anything on the anniversary of the uprising,” the opposition media reported Iran International.

Mahsa Amini’s father, Amjad, announced on Instagram on Saturday that he would hold a memorial service for his daughter at the cemetery in her hometown of Saqqez in the west of the country. On Sunday, Iran International reported that Mahsa Amini’s family had been threatened by the intelligence service, to dissuade them from visiting her grave.

Mr. Amini regretted, during an interview on Saturday with Voice of America, that justice has not provided “no response” on the death of the young girl “two years after the tragic death” of the latter.

The regime on its guard

The Conservative Journal Hamshahri, organ of the capital’s municipality, claims that opponents of the Islamic Republic had “tried last year to exploit the death of a teenage girl in the metro to launch the Mahsa 2 project.”

“In recent days, we have seen similar lies spread with the political-media support of Western governments in order to influence public opinion in the country,” warns the daily.

To prevent any gatherings, security agents have made multiple arrests across the country. In recent days “pressure on political, trade union and civil activists has intensified”reports Iran International. “New wave of repression and detention has been stronger in Kurdistan,” Mahsa Amini’s native province, the same source said.

More protests

Two years later, Woman Life Freedom “no longer exists as a political activity and movement”acknowledges the Prague media Radio Farda. However, “He has notably succeeded in shaking up the compulsory hijab and increasing society’s self-confidence,” explains the Persian-language site. Since the protests, Iranian women have continued to defy the authorities by going out bareheaded in public places in major cities, particularly Tehran.
