Here are the favorite car brands and models in Luxembourg in 2024

At the end of a year 2024 where the Luxembourg automobile market showed a slight decline in the number of new car registrations (-5% compared to 2023), what about the performances by brand. And which models are favored by buyers? By scrutinizing the national register of the Société nationale de circulation automobile (SNCA), a particularly laborious and imperfect exercise (see explanations at the end of the article), we were able to determine which brands and models of cars had registered the most new registrations in 2024.

Volkswagen imperturbable leader

This has been a constant since 2018, a year beyond which we have not delved into the statistics: Volkswagen is the brand which, each year in Luxembourg, sees the most new car registrations. In 2024, 5,934 models from the German manufacturer were the subject of such a procedure with the administration (purchase should be differentiated from registration).

This small growth of 1.8% compared to 2023 is synonymous with better performance since 2019 for the brand of the eponymous group, second world manufacturer behind Toyota in terms of vehicle sales, according to a report from the Reuters agency published the year pass. However, in the Grand Duchy, the gap with the competition has never been so narrow since 2018: BMW, driven by growth of 10.5% compared to 2023, is only 500 units behind VW, with 5,428 registrations in 2024.

German brands dominate the top of this ranking with Mercedes in third position (3,870, -7.4%) ahead of Audi (3,407, -13%). Fiat and Opel leave the top 10, where we observe the presence of Skoda (2,975), Renault (2,074), Peugeot (1,912), Tesla (1,677), Volvo (1,634) and Kia (1,530).

Further down the ranking, note the explosion of BYD. The Chinese electric car manufacturer, which opened a first Luxembourg dealership in partnership with Car Avenue at the start of 2024, accumulated 235 first registrations during the past year, compared to 9 the previous year.

What about luxury cars?

In the depths of the annual ranking, we notice the presence of several of the most prestigious brands in the automotive world. This is how in 2024, 84 Ferraris, 72 Lamborghinis, 50 Alpines, 48 Maseratis, 40 Aston Martins, 26 Bentleys, 4 Rolls-Royces and 3 McLarens were registered for the first time in Luxembourg.

A BMW at the top of the ranking by model

If Volkswagen dominates the ranking by brand, it is another German manufacturer which obtains first place when the magnifying glass is worn on the models.

The

In second place, a 100% electric vehicle appears: the Tesla Model 3 with 949 registrations. Two Volkswagen models follow, the multi-generational and timeless (894) and the Tiguan (739).

Note that we have voluntarily chosen to bring together the different versions of the 500, produced by Fiat and sometimes marketed by the tuner Abarth with its logo. Likewise, we mixed the different versions of the Mercedes GLC (including the AMG models). Same with the Mini Cooper (with the versions prepared by John Cooper Works), the A3 and the Q3 from Audi, the countless versions of the Series 1 or 3 from BMW.

Some methodological cautions

The classification by brand is carried out on the basis of data communicated by the SNCA to Statec. The more complex classification by model is the result of the compilation of open source data from the monthly statement of “delta operations”, which lists all the changes in the Luxembourg automobile fleet.

Note, however, that the immense national operations file is imperfect. It includes obvious entry errors here and there. For example, some A3, A5 or A6 models, Audi vehicles, were identified in 2024 as new registrations of Volkswagen models. These errors are, however, minor given the immensity of the file which records several tens of thousands of operations each month.
