The oldest of the Dordogne, Geneviève Callerot, farmer, resistance fighter and writer died Thursday at the age of 108, learned “ici Périgord” on Friday January 17 from the mayor of her village of Saint-Aulaye, Yannick Lagrenaudie. She died Thursday at the Saint-Aulaye-Puymangou nursing home (municipalities which merged in 2016).
Born in 1916, Geneviève Callerot had experienced both world wars. Resistant, she distinguished herself by bringing several dozen illegal immigrants across the demarcation line, reports “ici Périgord” which describes a strong personality.
After her job as a farmer (she was still driving a tractor at 100), she became a writer and published six books on peasant life and the Occupation. She was decorated with the Legion of Honor in 2018. Two years ago, she still went to colleges to discuss with young people the events that marked her long life.
