Computer hacking and physical dangers: beware of Bluetooth-connected sex toys

Sex toys controlled remotely via an online app or other device carry a high risk of physical or psychological harm from hackers, according to a report commissioned by the British government.

«[Les jouets sexuels présentent] multiple vulnerabilities and attack surfaces [avec une] “clear capacity to inflict physical and psychological harm on unconscious consumers,” concluded researchers of a study commissioned by the UK government’s Department of Science, Innovation and Technology last year and reported by ” Forbes” Saturday.

The study, which covered all smart devices connected to the Internet, including children’s toys, smart light bulbs and even fitness watches, would have revealed a particular danger on the side of smart sex toys, according to the American media.

Indeed, these devices, and in particular those which have “often unencrypted” Bluetooth connectivity, would be particularly “vulnerable to attacks and/or interceptions by malicious third parties”, the researchers raised.

Not only could users be faced with the exploitation of particularly sensitive personal data, they could also suffer more physical consequences, noted Forbes.

Four years ago, the American media reported, for example, a situation of hacking of intelligent chastity belts from the Chinese company Qiui, which lock via an application. Hackers then compromised the system to take control of it, in order to demand a ransom in exchange for users’ access to their own genitals.

These devices can also cause “overheating” injuries, the researchers noted, according to Forbes.

So, it’s best to weigh the risks of hacks before connecting a smart device to an app, Forbes advised, and make sure to keep the software involved up to date and secure.
