A new tax on motorhomes with weight planned for 2025

Attention motorhome fans in Europe: prepare for some major changes in Switzerland and Spain. From 2025new rules will shake up the taxation, use and parking of these vehicles. The idea behind all this? Better manage their impact on the environment and local logistics, while adapting to the particularities of the locations.

In Switzerland, a tax that weighs heavily

In Suisseexpect a new tax coming soon 2025. It will not only affect motorhomes, but also hearses and other cellular vehicles. The big news is that this tax will be based on the total vehicle weightunlike the old system which focused on CO2 emissions. Result: the heavier your vehicle, the more you pay.

This new situation could well suit some owners. Older models of motorhomes, often more polluting but generally less heavy, will no longer be penalized by the CO2 tax. The tax slip will arrive in your mailbox as soon as May 30, 2025with payment expected before June 30, 2025. Geneva, with its urban density and numerous tourists, is particularly affected by this measure.

Parking in Spain: pay attention to the new rules

In Spain too, things are moving in terms of motorhomes! There General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) will be implemented as soon as 2025 brand new rules for approximately 10 000 camping-cars registered in the country. The objective? Better integrate these vehicles into public spaces while limiting their ecological footprint.

Among the new features:

  • It is now impossible to take out tables or chairs when you are parked on the public road.
  • And we forget the wild emptying of liquids from your vehicle!

To guarantee stability and safety, your machines must rest on their wheels or be properly chocked.

Spanish municipalities will also have their say: they will be able to adapt local rules according to the size and weight of vehicles. A little flexibility welcome to meet the specific needs of different tourist regions.

What future for European tourism?

With these new Swiss and Spanish regulations, quite a few impacts are to be expected for European travelers who are fans of motorhome road trips. The French in particular will need to find out about these changes to avoid any unpleasant surprises during their vacation in Spain.

These decisions echo a European trend where we seek to better regulate the use of motorhomes to preserve our beautiful planet and make our cities more efficient. Each user must therefore remain vigilant in the face of legislative developments in each destination visited.

These initiatives clearly show that both Switzerland and Spain take the challenge of sustainable development linked to itinerant tourism very seriously. By adjusting their respective laws, they seek to find a balance between welcoming tourists and protecting their natural and urban landscapes. So before embarking on your next European adventure, remember to take a look at the new standards to continue to enjoy your trip with peace of mind!
