A press release from the Municipality indicates that Casablanca thus becomes the 14th African city and the first in North Africa to join this network.
According to the same source, Casablanca's membership in this collective was approved during the meeting of the Steering Committee of the Q40 which was held in Rio de Janeiro last November. The city will officially join the network in January 2025.
By becoming the first city in North Africa to join C40, Casablanca positions itself as an example of commitment to sustainability and the fight against climate change, said the press release, stressing that the city thus strengthens the voice of the continent in global initiatives against climate change.
“Joining C40 Cities demonstrates our desire to build a green, smart and inclusive city,” declared the president of the Casablanca municipal council, Nabila Rmilicited by the press release.
“As the first city in the Maghreb to join this network, we want to share our actions and learn from other cities to better fight climate change,” she stressed.
This membership is a continuation of the progress made by Casablanca, particularly in the expansion of green spaces, the development of intelligent transport, the sustainable management of water resources and the climate resilience.
Thanks to this collaboration, Casablanca will benefit from the support of the C40 to fully integrate the climate goals in its urban planning and exchange good practices with other members of the network.
For the Municipality of Casablanca“joining this global coalition marks a new chapter in our quest for sustainability and we aspire for Casablanca’s membership to strengthen the representativeness of African cities in the fight against climate change,” notes the press release.
The C40 Cities represents more than 700 million inhabitants and a quarter of the world economy. It brings together nearly 100 of the world's largest cities, which are taking bold and innovative steps to tackle climate challenges and supporting their efforts to become leaders in sustainability.
