As the holidays approach, the consumer association UFC-Que Choisir is warning of the presence of a food additive considered “probable carcinogenic” in foie gras sold in large stores, in a specific supermarket. A pot of foie gras that is “bad” for your health, to be avoided according to the brand new comparison of foie gras 2024 unveiled by the association.
The time to go to the supermarket to do your holiday meal shopping is almost here. If you are one of those who get a little ahead of the game by purchasing fine foods that can be preserved before the rest of the fresh products, then you are surely looking for the best champagne of the year and the best foie gras 2024 available in supermarkets, while trying to avoid the traps so as not to be a victim of truffle product scams. Indeed, the consumer association, which independently tests our everyday products, has unveiled a brand new comparison of foie gras 2024. It began its selection of foie gras in supermarkets last November, to be able to sift through the recipes and have a jury of experts taste around fifteen whole duck foie gras, cooked or semi-cooked, sold by national brands as well as private labels. If after the experts noted the appearance, the smell, the texture with a knife and the taste and persistence in the mouth of each of these foie gras, they further determined the most “bad” foie gras from the selection at the tasting, the UFC-Que Choisir also puts a “red card for U Saveurs” to foie gras for a completely different reason than its flavor: its composition.

Foie gras bad for your health: here is the jar of foie gras to avoid in supermarkets, according to the UFC-What to choose
It is more precisely the whole duck foie gras U Saveurs of the distributor brand present on the shelves of U stores – which is sold at €94.40/kg – which is problematic according to the association. Although rated no less than 10.7/20 following the tasting of the foie gras by the jury of experts, the UFC-Que Choisir explains that this foie gras, which is one of the four semi-cooked in the selection, still has two problematic additives in its recipe: E250 and E301.

As the results of this comparison indicate, the additive E301 is none other than sodium ascorbate (an antioxidant) which does not a priori present any danger, but E250 is a preservative “Rated “Avoid” in our additive rating”warns the UFC-What to choose. Also called sodium nitrite, it is an additive “classified as probable carcinogen by health agencies”underlines the consumer association, which invites people to exclude its consumption as a precaution. “It is regrettable to still find this type of ingredient in a foie gras recipe, especially since it is entirely possible to do without them – which is what the 14 other references in our selection do”comments the association which recommends that consumers carefully check the list of ingredients on the labels of foie gras at the time of purchase to ensure that they do not consume this additive that is potentially harmful to our health.

Choosing a good foie gras: here are the 2 points to watch out for according to the UFC-What to choose to have a good foie gras in supermarkets
Finding good foie gras in supermarkets is not easy, especially this year when inflation on foie gras is not sparing our budget. “The increases affected the least expensive products on the shelf more, reducing the price differential”underlines the association. It is therefore increasingly difficult to find a good, inexpensive foie gras in 2024, because as the conclusions of this supermarket survey indicate, the best foie gras in the selection are labeled products (Red Label, under geographical indication protected (IGP)) which are also among the most expensive. Price can therefore be an indicator of quality, when it is coupled with a label, but it is not necessarily enough.

This is why the main thing to remember is that we must favor “whole foie gras” over simply “foie gras”, which is a much less qualitative designation. Also avoid blocks of foie gras which are even lower quality.
