Launched in 2016, Epicery wanted to become the Uber of quality fresh produce. The online site did not withstand the difficult economic context and strong competition.
After 9 years of existence, Epicery, the fresh produce delivery platform which digitalizes the offer of 1000 local merchants, will not survive the winter. Victim of a difficult economic context and strong competition in the sector, the company announced its closure on December 31. “The food delivery platform industry has gone through some particularly tough times in recent years, and we have not been sparedindicates the platform. Despite our unwavering commitment to supporting local commerce, analysis of our results reveals that our economic model is no longer viable. Despite all our efforts to improve our performance, we are now forced to close our doors due to lack of prospects for recovery.”
The blow is hard for this platform launched in 2016, which aimed to become the Uber of fresh products (fruits, vegetables, butchers, charcutiers, fishmongers and even cheese shops) delivered during the day. Seduced, several business angels including Xavier Niel (via his Kima Ventures fund), Marc Ménasé (founder of Founders Future) and Michaël Benabou did not hesitate to invest in the project. In 2021, the La Poste group acquired 89% of Epicery via its subsidiary GeoPost, which specializes in parcels and express delivery. Today, it operates mainly in Paris, Île-de-France and Lyon and works with a selection of traders in other cities in France.
Before drawing the curtain, “However, we want to offer you a memorable end-of-year celebration. We know, this period is crucial for you as for our craftsmen, we remain fully committed to honoring, with your care, your latest orders, with joy and conviviality”insists the platform on its site.
