Coach of Frölunda HC by day, coach of Fribourg-Gottéron by night. Such is the life of Roger Rönnberg, slightly enlarging the line. By signing up with the Dragons at the end of May, starting next season, the Swede (53 years old) placed himself in an energy-consuming situation. That of managing two professional training courses at the same time.
But the Scandinavian technician is not complaining about it, on the contrary. “I have been coaching for 33 years. Of that total, I didn’t coach for only three years. And it was so boring! I really enjoy working with a team on a daily basis. So soon being part of Friborg motivates me enormously!”
Roger Rönnberg, stationed in Gothenburg since 2013, wants to leave his country through the front door. But also arriving in Switzerland with homework well done. Hence the long days.
“I have regular contact with Gerd (editor’s note: Zenhäusern, the Friborg sports director)late in the evening or at night. And as I also watch Gottéron’s matches, it allows me to spot potential players to recruit. My wife thinks hockey is a little too present (laughs). But it’s a normal way of life when you’re a professional.”
The Swedish bench man, with an impressive CV (twice winner of the SHL and four-time European champion with Frölunda), will however not take advantage of this week of international break to go to Fribourg, where the Swiss Ice Hockey Games.
“I do not allow myself such visits during the season,” explains Roger Rönnberg. I don’t want to disturb the team or the current technical staff, for whom I have a lot of respect. I prefer to stay away, especially since the team has started winning matches. I hope she continues like this.”
