Technip Energies and GE Vernova win a major contract for the first gas-fired power plant without C02 emissions.

The French Technip Energies, in consortium with the American GE Vernova and the British Balfour Beatty, won a contract which could call for many others from NZT Power Limited for the realization of the Net Zero Teesside Power (NZT Power) project in the United Kingdom. This ambitious project of its kind aims to build the world's first gas-fired power plant equipped with a carbon capture and storage (CCS) systemmarking a significant step forward in the fight against climate change as well as the opening of a new market.

The NZT Power project represents a major and original innovation in the energy sector. Located in the United Kingdom, this plant will be capable of capturing up to 2 million tonnes of CO2 per yearwhich will then be transported and permanently stored by the Northern Endurance Partnership project. With a generating capacity of 742 megawatts, this plant will provide low-carbon electricity to more than a million British homes each year, playing a key role in the country's energy transition.

This new form of energy is the “fairest” on Earth and could provide 3000 GW in the United States alone (i.e. more than the world's electricity consumption)

Technological and financial support

Funding for the project was secured following the announcement of an investment of £21.7 billion (€26.33 billion) by the UK government to support carbon capture and storage initiatives. This financial support is crucial for the implementation of advanced technologies necessary for the success of the project, such as Shell’s CANSOLV* CO2 capture systemintegrated by Technip Energies.

Franco-American-British collaboration and innovation

The collaboration between Technip Energies, GE Vernova, and Balfour Beatty, with the support of Shell Catalysts & Technologiesillustrates the importance of bringing together skills and cutting-edge technologies to meet current climate challenges. The plant will use a GE Vernova 9HA.02 gas turbine, optimized for CO2 capture, as well as various advanced equipment to maximize efficiency and reduce emissions.

The NZT Power project will generate 3,000 to 4,000 UK jobs during construction, power around 1.3 million homes and contribute £3.5 billion to the UK economy by 2050.

Economic impact and job creation

The NZT Power project will also be a driver of regional economic growth. The construction of the power plant is planned for create more than 3,000 jobs in the construction sector and generate 1,000 annual jobs during its operational phase. These jobs will help boost the local economy and support the community in the North East of England.

A strong commitment towards carbon neutrality

This project is part of the UK's commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. It represents a crucial step towards this goal, demonstrating the commitment of government and private business to invest in clean and sustainable technologies . By combining gas power generation with renewable energy, the NZT Power project is laying the foundations of a sustainable energy future for the UK.

The European economy, particularly the French one, will shake in 2024 with this strategic sector in decline but 2025 could bring a (timid) recovery

This article explores the Net Zero Teesside Power project, a prime example of how technological innovation, supported by strategic collaboration and public funding, can lead to sustainable energy solutions that address climate challenges while promoting economic growth . With this project, Technip Energies, GE Vernova, and their partners are redefining the standards of modern energy production for a cleaner, greener future.
