A fire on Monday in a fuel depot of the Italian energy supplier Eni in Calenzano, Tuscany, left two dead, three missing and nine injured, according to the regional prefecture.

The fire was caused by an “explosion”, said the president of the Tuscany region Eugenio Giani on Telegram. According to an Eni press release, the fire was limited to a loading zone on this site linked to the Livorno refinery, without ever threatening the entire storage park.

Amateur videos posted on social media show flames several meters high and a huge plume of black smoke emerging from the site, not far from the fuel tanks.

A security perimeter

A perimeter of five kilometers around the site has been decreed, within which residents are invited to confine themselves to their homes so as not to be inconvenienced by the fumes. Civil Protection also asked residents of the region to close their doors and windows.
